A Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, the Defense for Yoruba People’s Rights (DYPR) has condemned in strong terms, the killing of Mrs Funke Olakunrin, daughter of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa. Reuben Fasoranti, by suspected gunmen along Lagos/Ore expressway in Odigbo Local Government of Ondo state.
The organisation described the incident as unfortunate and irreparable loss, not only to the entire Yoruba race, but the entire nation.
In a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti and signed by its National President, Otunba Muyideen Olamoyegun, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent, the group described the killing as painful, barbaric and saddening.
The Yoruba group however called on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to swore into action and fish out the perpetrators within the next twenty four hours.
While commiserating with the foremost Elder Stateman, his family, the people of Ondo State as well as the entire Yoruba race over the unfortunate death of Mrs Olakunrin, the DYPR, said the people of the South West can no longer fold their hands on the level of insecurity in the region.
The statement stressed the need for security officials to be alive to their duties in safeguarding the citizens of the country, saying the move would further ensure peace and harmony in the country.
The group while describing the claim by some groups that the deceased was killed by armed robbers as a ill thought, explained that the spot where she was shot had long a go known as a danger spot where suspected herdsmen who resides in the bush within the area always adopt travellers and disposes victims of their belongings including money.
The DYPR also used the occasion to throw its weight behind the call for restructuring of the country, saying the move if not politicised by politicians might be the panacea to the myriads of problems confronting a disjointed and faulty union like Nigeria.
