Group opposes IPAC approval of coming Osun council poll

A socio-political group, Osun Youths Progressives (O-SPY), has called on the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) to shun the February 22, 2025, local government election in Osun State, describing it as an affront to the judiciary.

The demand followed the recent Appeal Court verdict that reinstated All Progressives Congress (APC) council executives sacked by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The governor had removed the APC council bosses elected in 2022 after a Federal High Court declared their election illegal.

In response, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) scheduled a fresh poll.

However, the appellate court last Monday reversed the lower court’s decision, restoring the sacked council officials to their positions.

Reacting, O-SPY insisted that the reinstated council executives remain the legitimate occupants of the offices, rendering the scheduled election unnecessary and unlawful.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the group’s coordinator, Tunmise Ajiboye, said, “The constitution is clear, government must obey court rulings before taking any further action. Osun State was created by law and must uphold the law.”

“We call on IPAC to boycott this illegal election. Participating would amount to contempt and a mockery of the judiciary. Let OSSIEC carry out its illegality alone,” he added.
