Guide your children in choosing career- Educationist
From Fisayo Akinduro, Osogbo
Parents have been urged to guide their children in choosing a career in order to have positive impacts in the society.
An educationists, Olanrewaju Babasola who disclosed this in Osogbo said most of the graduates universities produced these days are in the wrong profession.
Babasola while noting the rate of unemployed youths in the society said most of the graduates are unemployable due to lack of expertise and interest in their chosen career.
He said people should stop blaming government for the rate of unemployment, rather ensure that students are properly guided in choosing careers.
“Most of the graduates and majority of students nowadays are in the wrong profession. They all want to study a course that will make their parents and family proud.
“Some are engineers when they would have made impact in the laboratory, while some are accountants when they would have functioned well in fashion designing.”
He said parents need to study their children to know what they have passion for and keep asking what they want to become in the future.
Babasola said it is high time parents and guardians stopped forcing careers on their children in order to make themselves proud in the society.
“What is the essence of forcing your child to study medicine when he/she has passion for agriculture or engineering.
“Most of these things are the cause of stagnant development in the country where graduates cannot contribute meaningfully to the society.”
He urged the government and schools to sensitise parents and guardians on choosing careers for their children.
