Half salary: Lecturers frustrated as students fear fresh strike

By Saheed Ibrahim

Students in Nigerian public universities have lamented over lack of concentration and unending complaints from their lecturers.

The Hope gathered that some lecturers were not coming to classes as expected while others who came complained more than they taught the students.

The Hope gathered that the federal government was yet to commence payment of the eight months protracted strike as they only received half salaries for the month of October.

Some of the students took to their social media pages to air their experiences. Those who spoke with The Hope under condition of anonymity said the half October salary paid to the lecturers was a fuel to the burning fire.

One of the students at the University of Ibadan said, “Some lecturers did not even bother to come to class. Those that came will lecture for 20 minutes and use the rest to complain”.

At the Federal University of Technology, Akure, a final year student told The Hope that, “I do not think we have resumed. In fact, I have not seen my project supervisor. When we called him on phone, you could tell his indifference on phone. He only said we will see him when we see him.

Another student said, “I saw my lecturer and he looked so lean and obviously struggling. I felt really bad for them. It is not fair to be honest”.

Recall that the lecturers had expressed dissatisfaction through ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, saying, “Half salaries were paid; no reasons were given whatsoever,” urging President Muhammadu Buhari to call the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige to order.
