Hardship: Burglars cart away pots of soup, foodstuffs in Ondo

By Tola Gbadamosi

A 35-year-old pregnant woman, Mrs Grace Akigbe has lamented the disappearance of her foodstuffs and pot of soup from her house by suspected burglars at Oba-Ile Community in Akure North local government area of Ondo state.

The Hope Metro gathered that, Akigbe who was with her 3-year-old daughter in the house heard a strange noise from the kitchen around 2:00am.

According to her, the burglar who was with a torchlight came in through the Kitchen window after successfully removing the iron burglary.

“When I saw the light, I tip-toed towards the dining room and peeped, only to see a man in my kitchen carrying my pot of soup and escaped through the kitchen window.

“I couldn’t say anything, I was alone with my little daughter and I am pregnant, my husband went to work.

“I quickly went back to the room and locked myself and baby up for fear of being attacked by the suspected robber.

“There was no light and my phone was down. When I saw that the day was getting brighter and everywhere was safe, I went out of my room.

“I got to my kitchen and realized that all the food stuff my husband bought before traveling to work were all gone, including the pot soup I newly made for the week”, she lamented.

The pregnant lady further explained that, nothing else was taken in the house.

“I left my laptop on the dinning table which I felt I may not see again. To my greatest surprise, it was still there and this depicted, that the burglar came primarily for food items.

“Painfully, the half bag of rice, quarter bag of beans, some tubers yams and my pot of soup were missing from the house.

“I called officers of the Oba-Ile Police Division who came to check around and discovered, that my house was not the only one that was burgled for foodstuff that night in my street.

They said that there where three other houses that were also affected in which their pots of soup and food stuffs were stolen.

It appears, that those days when hoodlums would break into people’s houses and demand for money and other valuables seem not to be common, as they now go for food items and pots of soups to quench hunger.

This, however appeared to be one of the strategies adopted by burglars to overcome the ongoing economic hardship ravaging homes.

Akigbe, however, called on the security agencies to boost their security architecture around Oba-ile community towards ensuring a safe environment for all.
