Herdsmen attack Ifira Akoko farmers, destroy crops

By Jimoh Ahmed, Owo

The people of Ifira Akoko in Akoko Southeast Local Government area of Ondo State have sent a save our soul to the state government and security agents to stop Fulani herdsmen who have been destroying their crops and farmlands with their cattle.

The call came as a result of an attack on some residents of the town on Saturday.

The herdsmen reportedly attacked two farmers at Ifira Akoko.

The victims, Gbenga Omotoriogun and Duro Akadiri, who were said to be hospitalized in an undisclosed hospital are believed to be in critical condition.

It was learnt that the farmers were attacked despite the fact that they even begged the herdsmen to stop grazing on their farmlands which usually ended in their crops being destroyed by cattle.

According to sources, it has become a tradition for the herdsmen to graze their cattle on farms in the area.

When The Hope tried to get the reaction of the police in Isua, headquarters of the local government, a competent source with the security agent who refused to talk on the matter, said the state command should be contacted.

However, our reporter reliably gathered that the case was duly reported to the police in the community.

Meanwhile residents have appealed to government to come to their rescue.

Some of those who made this appeal include Mr Owabumoye Alade and a youth leader in the community, Segun Ologbosere.

They posited that farmers in the area are now afraid to go to farms for fear of being attended by herdsmen.
