Honesty, integrity crucial to scientists’ results’

Honesty and integrity are important attributes that a scientists must possess if reliable results are to be obtained when dealing with patients and patients samples.

These were the words of the Guest Lecturer and a Professor of Chemical Pathology, University of Calabar, Cross River State, Maisie Etukudo in a lecture she delivered at the 8th induction/oath taking ceremony of Qualified Medical  Laboratory Scientists, 2018/2019 session of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State.

Delivering the lecture titled :”Opportunity for Medical Laboratory Professionals in the 21st Century”, Etukudo emphasised that in the practise of Medical Laboratory Science, three qualities are required for effective delivery of services which are, Integrity, Intelligence and energy, adding that integrity is paramount, as it is the bedrock of the profession.

According to her:” Unethical behaviour such as forgery is not accepted as the life of patient will be put in danger. In practice, integrity is very important, as if they don’t have integrity, intelligence and energy will kill the patience”.

She enumerated where they could be relevant to include Centre for Gene studies and Gene Mapping /Molecular Biology, National Blood Centre for the Production of Blood Components, Oil/Gas Industry, and Maintenance and Fabrication of Laboratory equipment and many others.

Admonishing them to continue to update their knowledge, so that they will be relevant adding that should also show leadership skills in their various endeavours by following the rules that guides their profession.

While inducting the students, the Registrar/CEO, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Dr. Tosan Erhabor who was represented by a Director from Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Mr Gregory Unchulor  called on them to eshew misconduct while carrying out their profession, saying only those who do what is right will succeed.

In his closing remark, the Pro- Chancellor, Dr Bode Ayorinde who thanked God for making the event a successful one, described it as another step towards fulfilling the lofty vision of setting up the University.

 Ayorinde urged the inductees to make integrity their watchword and pursue their careers with integrity and excellence.

The Vice Chancellor Prof Tunji Ibiyemi said the university was one of the best in the academic discipline.

He said, “I am delighted to witness the eighth induction, Achiever University is the second in the south west to run the program, in terms of courses, performance. We are not far from the first, if not the first not only south west but Nigeria as a whole.”
