Panic erupted along the Agulu-Nanka boundary in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday morning after suspected gunmen killed two people in a sudden and deadly attack.
The incident, which occurred at about 10:45 a.m., sent shockwaves through the two neighbouring communities as residents fled for safety.
Witnesses said the assailants arrived on a motorcycle, carried out the killings swiftly, and escaped before security forces could respond.
According to eyewitness accounts, one of the victims was shot while seated inside a red saloon car. The second victim was gunned down while attempting to flee the scene. The identities of the deceased have not been officially released, and the motive for the attack remains unclear.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that the victims may have been members of local security outfits formed to support community safety during the recent election period. The claim, however, has not been independently verified.
Efforts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls. However, a senior police officer confirmed the killings and stated that the Commissioner of Police has deployed personnel to track down the perpetrators.
“The situation is under control, and we are on the trail of the assailants,” the officer said, adding that a formal police statement would be issued in due course.
