‘How I chose music over Engineering’

An upcoming artiste, Steve Victor with the stage name Steve Neutron, is a Delta State based artiste.

Steve in an interview with Damilola Akinmolayan & Elisha Arafin of Friday Extravaganza said he ventured into the music industry in order to touch souls, Excerpts:

Tell us about your musical career?

I didn’t know I can sing, I never thought of it for once until I had my last break up with the girl I loved so much with everything in my life. Though, I have never been lucky in relationships but the last one, I almost committed suicide, but the breakup later turned out to be a testimony for me.

How did you know music was your calling?

My last breakup triggered my passion for music.

I channeled my pains, aggression and emotions into tears, and I started singing. That was how I could not stop getting vibes of music even after healing from my past, it falls in like an inspiration ever since.

What was your parents’ reaction to your music career?

At first, my parents detested it. They said, none of their children will ever go into the music industry. Despite their threats, I was adamant to my passion. My mother would come to the room pissed off whenever I sing but after a while, they figured out that I was determined. Soon, my mother stopped getting pissed off or interrupting my music. Later, I was able to win my father’s heart by writing and singing a very old people pattern of music which he ended up liking so much and that’s how I began presenting my songs to him for review. My family is totally fine with my musical career now.

How were your sound discovered?

My sound was discovered from listening to songs of depression during the period I was down. I would turn on the playlist and listened to sweet songs, I began blending into that sound then I added my essence to it, to make it mine.

Have you ever found music to be exhausting, if yes, how were you able to handle the pressure to meet the demand of the audience?

The only part I usually experience difficulty is at the point of recording since I am using my mobile phone and a phone work cannot be compared with what a laptop can do.

But aside that, every challenge feels like a blessing to me and I am excited when I see a challenge because challenges make me unleash my hidden potential.

What do you see yourself doing if you had not followed your dream?

I would have being an Electrical/Electronics Engineer because that is what I studied in school.

What are your views on the current state of the Nigerian music industry? What positive changes do you think should be injected?

I have discovered that everyone is up to Afro beat, no one sings anything else than afro vibes. I think that is a little bit out of place, there are other classes of music that have not been appreciated well enough in Nigeria and in my case, I intend to influence Nigeria with the love of ‘Emo Rap/Emo Trap’ I want to be able to touch people’s souls whenever they listen to me.
