How to get prepaid meters – BEDC

By Fatima Muraina

Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has urged those interested in prepaid meters to follow due process and be metered.

The BEDC Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Mr Mike Barnabas in a chat with The Hope in Akure, the Ondo state capital observed that there were allegations that people were collecting money arbitrarily from customers for meters.

He urged customers to get proper information and clarification from the company before making any payment.

He noted that those with genuine receipts of payment presented same and have got prepaid meters.

“People that had paid for meters under the old system around 2014/2015 were called through several publications and jingles for settlements.”

He said there was nobody that had paid in 2018 and 2019 that has not been given meter.

He added that customers could still apply for meters, explaining that the company is working within areas that have been mapped out for metering.

According to him, the company is working in some terrains because meters being installed could only function with concrete poles and not with the wooden ones.

“We are working in some terrains because the meters we are rolling out are all pole mounted meters and before we can install meter for customers, we must ensure that the pole, is a concrete pole”, he stated.

He said the company has to do what he termed ‘clean up the network’ by replacing the wooden poles with the concrete ones.

While saying that customers could pay for any meter on installment , reminded customers that the cost for a single phase prepaid meter is N39,765, while the three phase meter costs N72,085.
