Hunter shoots farmer mistaken for antelope dead

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Oke-Eda, Akure yesterday remanded a 30-year-old farmer, Isiaka Audu, for allegedly shooting a farmer to death in his farm.
The defendant who was arrested by the police in Owo, is facing a count charge of murder.
According to the prosecutor, Abdullateef Suleiman, the defendant committed the offence on December 18, 2023, at about 7:30 am at Imuje Camp via Owo.
Suleiman alleged that Audu shot a 50-year-old farmer, Sodiq Dada, with a locally made single barrel gun on the head and chest while hunting, which led to the victim’s death.
Isiaka was said to have claimed that he mistook the victim for an antelope during an hunting expedition.
The wife of the deceased said the defendant and her late husband were not in good terms because he was owing him some amount of money.
It was gathered that immediately after the deceased was shot, he shouted the defendant’s name to the hearing of his wife.
The offence, according to the charge, contravene Section 316(1) and 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo, 2006.
Due to the nature of the offence, the prosecutor prayed the court to remand the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, Akure, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions(DPP).
The plea of the defendant, who had no legal representation, was not taken.
Chief Magistrate Tope Aladejana remanded the defendant in the Okitipupa Correctional Centre.
He adjourned the case till April 25, 2024, for DPP’s advice.
