A Saxophonist, Taiwo Owaniyi with the stage name BRASS ORACLE is a graduate of music from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

In this interview with Friday Extravaganza, he exposes the many wonders saxophone can perform and how he fell in love with it

Excerpts:

Can you intimate us with the wonders of Saxophone?

To begin with and to mention but a few, saxophone is a woodwind instrument and most importantly, a vocal instrument that has the ability to speak the way human beings speak(This is why I can use my saxophone to crow like a cock). Isn’t that wonderful? I guess that’s a wonder on it’s own.

Also, the way a lion roars, you can also use your saxophone the same way to roar.( Pastor kunle Ajayi of RCCG does this very well).

Furthermore, Saxophone is a musical instrument that God uses in the hand of the minister to pass a message of hope, and healing to the nations.

Also, It has the ability to reach an higher register which we call, altissimo. Lastly, Saxophone is a creative instrument which has the ability to help you express your creativeness through the way you pick your notes.

How is a Saxophonist different from a musician or are both passing across same message?

A musician is not so different from a saxophonist because the two are still using the same language that is, music to pass a message to the world. But, the message could be different. For instance, Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a saxophonist and also, a professional saxophonist. The message(s) he passed through his songs before he ascended to the great beyond was quite different from Pastor Kunle Ajayi of RCCG(Saxophonist) whose message is strictly about salvation. In essence, a saxophonist could be a Musician while Musician could be a saxophonist.

Why did you choose to be a saxophonist?

Well, I didn’t choose saxophone rather, Saxophone chose me. I was trumpeter before I started playing saxophone. While I was playing trumpet, anytime I hear people play saxophone, there’s always an unimaginable feeling. It(Saxophone) beckons to me anytime I hear people play. What I hear in my ears transcends the mortal realm. So, when the time came, I bought saxophone with the token I was collecting from home and ministrations then. I got materials and that was the beginning of my journey into the realm of saxophone.

Is handling a Saxophone an inborn talent or something one can learn or study in school?

Well, even if it’s an inborn talent, there’s still a place of acquiring the knowledge and the skills.  Learning saxophone can be acquired within the four walls of the school(formal education) likewise, outside the four walls of the school (Informal education). For me, have never had the privilege of a personal teacher. It was Holy Spirit and the materials I got. During my undergraduate days in OAU, instead of buying books related to my course which was Religious Studies, I won’t buy it rather, I’ll buy music textbooks from OAU bookshop then. Most time, Holy Spirit also reveals to me my current level on saxophone and the things I could to do foster my improvement. So, Saxophone is an musical instrument or skill that can be learnt or acquire.

What are the challenges Saxophonists encounter?

To mention but a few, there are challenges saxophonist encounter starting from acquiring saxophone itself which is extremely costly. Saxophone is 150,000+ so, how many can afford that?

Another thing is the learning of the instrument itself. Learning of saxophone is quite expensive or should I say everything about saxophone is expensive. Servicing of saxophone should be at least twice in a month which is #5000. The Reed we use to play it is sold for #2,500 which does not last for a month or two. Getting to buy saxophone parts is another challenge.

A saxophonist need a good wireless microphone a good wireless microphone which is for sold for 50,000 plus. How many can afford this?

Another challenge is, most churches do not appreciate saxophonist. Some churches treat them like beggars.

The society is also part of this. At times, people price surprise for #2000, #1500. And if you talk, they’ll say, at least, it’s not more than 10minutes.

For me, no one is supporting me except God so, it’s hard out there trying to meet up with the bills and executing my plans seems so hard.

Lastly, getting a promoter seems an endless journey.
