I remain Speaker, Obasa dares Lagos Assembly

…accuses police of invading his houses, locking up his family

Barely 13 days after his impeachment, former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has asserted his position as the legitimate Speaker, citing constitutional provisions as the basis for his claim.

He also accused the police of connivance in his impeachment, alleging that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police led other security agencies to invade his houses in Ikeja GRA and Agege, several hours before his removal from office.

But the embattled Obasa insisted that he remained the Speaker “until the right thing is done.”

Obasa made his stance clear on Saturday during a reception held in his honour at his Ikeja GRA residence.

Recall that on January 13, the Assembly impeached Obasa over alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office and financial impropriety.

The former Lagos Speaker’s sack also occurred some weeks after he was accused of expending a whopping sum of N17billion on constructing a gate to the Assembly complex.

At the January 13 plenary, the Lagos Assembly lawmakers unanimously removed Obasa who had been Speaker since 2015.

The former Speaker, who was out of the country when he was impeached by his colleagues, was welcomed back home by his supporters and loyalists at his Joel Ogunnaike Ikeja GRA residence, on Saturday.

The event was attended by scores of his supporters from his Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe local government areas’ strongholds.

Reacting to his removal, Obasa maintained that the procedure did not adhere to constitutional requirements.

He declared the allegations against him as “fictitious and unsubstantiated.”

He, however, expressed his willingness to relinquish his position if his impeachment process is conducted in line with constitutional provisions.

But while fielding questions from newsmen shortly after he addressed his supporters, Obasa insisted that he remained the Speaker.

He said, “My status in the house? I believe strongly I am still the Speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it.

“I’m a Muslim and I believe in fate. But let’s do it the way it should be done.”

Asked if he’s poised for a legal battle over his removal, Obasa quipped, “You will know . It’s a matter of time. Thank you and God bless you.”

Obasa also noted that he was not afraid of removal, but the process should be done within the ambit of the law.

The former Speaker said his impeachment was done while he was away with the alleged conivance of the police.

He alleged that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police led security agents to invade his two houses and the Assembly ahead of his removal.

He further alleged that his houses in Agege and Ikeja were invaded by over 200 armed policemen who locked his family members indoors.

Obasa added, “If I am not Speaker, that’s not the end of the world. If you want to claim that I am corrupt, please prove it.
