IGP boosts anti-terror fight with specialised training

In a bid to enhance the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) capacity in combating terrorism and ensuring public safety, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated his commitment to continuous specialised training for officers, particularly in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).

This was highlighted during the successful completion of the fourth edition of the Explosive Ordnance Risk Education Training of Trainers (EORE ToT) course for personnel of the NPF-EOD unit.

The intensive week-long training, which ran from March 3 to March 7, 2025, was facilitated by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in collaboration with the British High Commission (BHC) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police assured Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security through proactive measures, including enhanced training and collaboration with international partners.

The training was designed to bolster the expertise of the NPF-EOD operatives, equipping them with advanced skills to train other officers and effectively implement life-saving safety measures in communities at risk of explosive hazards.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, held at the Peacekeeping Lecture Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, the IGP, who was represented by the Commissioner of Police in charge of EOD-CBRN, CP Patrick Atayero, stressed the significance of such specialised training in promoting safer communities and supporting humanitarian demining efforts.

Dignitaries present at the event included representatives from the BHC, the Embassy of Japan, JICA, the Embassy of France, the German Technical Advisory Group, and the National Mine Action Centre (NMAC).

The IGP further directed that fundamental EORE principles be integrated into the training curriculum of all Police Colleges and Institutions nationwide. According to him, the initiative aligns with the Force’s commitment to ensuring that all police personnel have a foundational understanding of Explosive Ordnance Risk Education, thereby enhancing national security efforts.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing the professional capabilities of its officers through sustained capacity-building initiatives to tackle emerging security threats effectively.
