From Fisayo Akinduro, Osogbo
As part of efforts to boost the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, the Osun State Government has revealed that all residents of the state will pay taxes in 2020.
Chairman of Osun Internal Revenue Service, Mr Adegbite Ademikanra who disclosed this in Osogbo said the agency would increase the IGR, of the state in the year 2020 by ensuring that those that are evading tax payment comply.
Ademikanra said it is unfortunate that only 600,000 people are paying tax out of over 1.5million that supposed to be paying tax in Osun.
Quoting section 24 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he said a Pastor that is collecting salary is expected to be paying tax.
“We have started now. Maybe you are a typist in the Church or Mosque, even a Pastor that is collecting salary is supposed to be paying tax.
He said the state government, rather than overburden those already paying taxes, is focusing on bringing more informal sector workers into the net of taxpayers in the state.
He said the state is targeting N3billion monthly saying, with the 70 percent increment in the performance in 2019, the coming year would be better.
He noted that from 2020, the agency will deploy technology to detect tax evasion, as well as block issues of leakages.
