Ijare celebrates new yam festival
The ancient town of Ijare in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State was lively on Sunday with the celebration of the annual New Yam Festival, also known as the Oluaye New Yam Festival.
The annual event commenced with special prayers at the old palace, where traditional chiefs gathered with rams and other items to offer prayers to the Sejeokun deity for the well-being, development, peace, progress, and unity of the town.
Prayers were also offered for Ijare’s sons and daughters in the diaspora, with the belief that these supplications would turn their fortunes around and help them overcome all challenges.
The New Yam Festival also featured the usual folklore songs, aimed at correcting societal ills. This year’s focus included a passionate appeal to the aggrieved party in the obaship selection process, led by the Sapetu, High Chief Wemimo Olaniran, to sheath their swords and allow for the peaceful selection and installation of a new Olujare.
Speaking on the New Yam Festival, the Regent of Ijare, High Chief Joseph Omoshebi Ogunleye, explained that the day is primarily dedicated to praying for the town, its residents, and indigenes, both at home and abroad.
