Ikare crises: Group sues for peace
Worried by unabated crises plaguing Ikare Akoko, prominent sons and daughters of the town have appealed to warring groups to embrace peace in the spirit of ‘Omoye’, for the growth and development of the community.
The group, ‘Ikare peace Think- Thank at its maiden meeting in Lagos identified four major causes of the conflict vis: white paper on Owa Ale chieftaincy stool and its upgrade to a Grade A Oba, existence of different versions of the white paper making those loyal to Owa Ale seeing the renaming as mere nomenclature and those loyal to Olukare as carving out Iyometa from Ikare, the dethronement of Olokoja for being loyal to Owa Ale and installation of a new one that is loyal to Olukare and ownership of Oloko area.
They also noted the proliferation of small and light ammunition in the town and uncontrolled use of drugs contributed to the escalation of the violence. They therefore called on the security agencies to arrest the trend and called on the security agencies to pick and prosecute those tormenting crisis in the town to serve as a deterrent to others.
The group which commended the state government for ensuring peace in the town called on the two monarchs to live peacefully as an indivisible entity saying that was the only solution for lasting peace in the community.
According to them, the warring parties must accept the fact that Ikare has two monarchs and must tolerate one another as it is being practiced in other towns like Akure, Owo, Epe and Ajowa. “Ikare think thank shall hence forth pursue genuine solutions to the lingering crisis by working with Ikare elders, the two Obas, state government, all sons and daughters of Ikare to ensure restoration of permanent peace in our homeland. “
They canvassed for the creation of three Local Government Development Area, LCDA, from the present Akoko North local government and meet with principal characters in the town with the view to prevailling them among others.
