In a gesture reflecting his commitment to justice and humane governance, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted clemency to 43 prisoners in the state.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, confirmed that the decision was based on the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo (SAN).
The governor’s move, which coincided with his swearing-in, underscores his administration’s resolve to uphold reformative justice and ensure a more lenient penal system.
As part of the clemency initiative, eight inmates were granted outright release, while 15 others on death row had their sentences commuted to various prison terms. Additionally, 20 prisoners serving life sentences had their punishments reduced to lesser terms.
Dr. Ajulo stated, “This decision is a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and the potential for rehabilitation. It is His Excellency’s responsibility to ensure that our justice system reflects mercy and humanity.”
He added that the Governor’s action aligns with his ongoing efforts to address issues within the penal system and to promote the reintegration of individuals into society as productive members.
