INEC, police, others commended over peaceful guber poll

By Sunmola Olowookere

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), through its Election Analysis Centre (EAC), has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies in Ondo State for ensuring that the recently concluded gubernatorial election was conducted smoothly and peacefully.

The Centre made this statement following the conclusion of its observation mission for the Ondo State governorship election.

It may be recalled that insecurity was a major concern in the build-up to the election. On November 13, armed thugs attacked members of a particular political party. In response to this development, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the deployment of 34,000 police officers to Ondo State. This was further complemented by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which deployed an additional 6,000 personnel.

Measures such as the restriction of vehicular movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the establishment of military checkpoints throughout the state helped to enhance security. A prompt response to reported incidents also contributed to maintaining order during the election.

The CDD-EAC acknowledged INEC’s efforts in preparing for the election, which included training ad hoc staff, deploying Registration Area Technical Officers (RATECHs), and ensuring the timely distribution of essential materials.

These efforts were reflected in the early opening of polling stations across the state and the quick resolution of issues affecting the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

While describing these efforts as commendable, the Centre noted that such positive aspects of the election process provide hope for the future of elections in Ondo State.

Acknowledging that the 2024 Ondo State governorship election has been won and lost, the Centre observed that the election was less competitive due to intense intra-party conflicts within major political parties at both state and federal levels.

The CDD-EAC called for more robust political participation in Nigeria’s electoral processes, supported by stronger political parties, emphasising that such efforts are essential for strengthening democracy.

The Centre also recognised improvements in the deployment and use of technology, particularly the efficiency of BVAS and the uploading of results to the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV). It stated: “Our observers noted a 78.4% effectiveness in the use of BVAS. In cases where malfunctions occurred, technical interventions to restore functionality were observed to be timely.”

While calling for improved voter education, the CDD-EAC expressed hope that future elections would remain peaceful and demonstrate progress in Nigeria’s journey towards a more representative, free, and fair democracy.
