Goods and property worth several millions of naira were consumed by an inferno which razed down the multi million naira Uhanmi Plaza along Jubilee road, Ikare Akoko.

The commercial edifice situated directly opposite the AP Petrol Filling Station, along Jubilee Road, in Ikare Akoko, Akoko North East Area of Ondo State houses many commercial and business interests.

Eyewitnesses told The Hope Metro that the fire incident which started at about 3:15am on Sunday was first noticed by some people who were returning from a vigil.

But their efforts and that of those who later joined them proved futile as the gates to the building were under lock and key.

It was learnt that the sympathetic crowd succeded in forcing the gate opened an hour later, but the intensity of the fire was too high for them to make any rescue effort.

A source told our correspondent that a rescue call was put across to the Ondo State Fire Services, but was met with disappointment as men of the Ikare Akoko station of the agency complained of necessary equipment to fight such intense fire.

An eyewitness, who is a tenant in the building, Mr Wasiu Momodu, said that it took the efforts of the neighbours and sympathizers to pit the fire which had done a lot of damages under control.

He said many properties worth several millions of naira were lost to the inferno. He, therefore, called on government and well to do Nigerians to assist the victims.

Similarly, another victim, a freelance broadcaster and programme presenter, Akeem Odedina popularly called Omo Ode Voice, lost properties worth about 15 million naira when his recording studio, situated in the shopping mall was razed down completely.
