Insecurity: Borokini canvasses self defence

By Ayodele Popoola

The ArchBishop of  Ondo Ecclesiastical and Bishop of Akure Anglican Diocese, Simon Borokini has expressed dismay at the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, calling on Nigerians to rise and defend themselves  against any form of attacks.

He said government promises to protect the citizens had not been kept and made  the country more unstable.

The Bishop made the call while delivering his Charge at the First Session of the 14th Diocesan Synod themed  “ Be a Worthy Ambassador of Christ ” held at St. Andrew’s Church, Oyemekun, Akure at the weekend.

He also noted  the  rate of insecurity in Nigerian society, as attack is being carried out on a daily basis, human lives are either lost or permanently damaged which has resulted to the gradual eroding of faith in the nation’s democracy.

He therefore called on the citizens to protect themselves, since the government has failed.

“The promise by the government to protect citizens from terrorists and criminals has not been kept.

The recent surge in insecurity has been linked to poverty across the country which showed that the nation’s abundant blessing is criminally managed

“So anybody willing to protect him or herself should do it, if it is gun if he has the opportunity he should obtain the license, I’m in support since the government is negligent,” he said.

He called on the government to do the needful concerning security challenges ravaging the nation and put an end to endless discussions and empty promises that have not yielded any fruit.

The Bishop advised Christians to be worthy ambassadors and be ready to make sacrifice.

“We are echoing the call from God, and we believe that we can indeed take the lead in the great reawakening and revival that is imminent in our land and nation”

The clergyman, however, urged Christians not to be discouraged with the level of insecurity charging them not to allow anything to stop them from doing the work of God

At the synod, an elder statesman, Olu of Ilu-Abo, Chief Olu Falae in his reaction emphasized that human efforts and wisdom cannot solve the problem  in Nigeria.

He  said it is only a divine intervention by God that would see us out of the crisis.
