Insecurity: NSCDC seeks stronger community ties

By Bukola Olamona
As part of efforts to strengthen security and emergency response, the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has emphasised the need for enhanced community engagement in tackling security challenges.
This was highlighted during a lecture organised to mark World Civil Defence Day, observed annually on March 1 under the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO). This year’s theme, “Civil Defence: Guarantee of Security for the Population,” provided a platform to discuss strategies for effective population protection in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, Commandant Oluyemi Ibiloye underscored the corps’ commitment to strengthening security through public collaboration. He noted that unlike many other security agencies, NSCDC operates within an international framework, aligning with global standards for emergency response and civil protection.
Delivering the anniversary lecture, Deputy Commandant Odunayo Yusuff highlighted the barriers to effective security collaboration, citing public distrust, inadequate communication, poor training, and excessive use of force as major challenges. He stressed the need for proactive engagement between security agencies and local communities to foster trust and enhance intelligence gathering.
The event also featured discussions on rapid-response infrastructure, community-based conflict resolution, and strategies to combat negative public perception of security agencies.
As part of the three-day programme, NSCDC is set to conduct capacity-building training on conflict resolution and mediation, equipping officers with modern techniques to maintain peace and security across Ondo State.
