Insecurity: Ondo lawmakers to partner communities

By Josephine Oguntoyinbo
Concerned by the rising security threats across Ondo State, the State House of Assembly has directed lawmakers to return to their constituencies and collaborate with traditional rulers and community leaders to strengthen local security arrangements.
This resolution followed a security briefing at the Assembly complex in Akure, with the Commander of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, where lawmakers reviewed ongoing security challenges and response strategies.
Speaking after the meeting, Speaker of the House, Chief Olamide Oladiji, noted that many criminal activities were being perpetrated by individuals who had found refuge within communities.
“The House observed that many criminal activities are linked to individuals who have been provided shelter. To address this, the Assembly has resolved to hold security meetings with royal fathers to develop strategies for monitoring and controlling these activities,” he said.
Oladiji stated that lawmakers had been tasked with engaging key stakeholders in their respective constituencies to develop grassroots security strategies, particularly to combat crimes such as kidnapping and land grabbing.
As part of its security reform efforts, the Assembly is also reviewing the Amotekun law with a view to making amendments that will enhance the Corps’ effectiveness in tackling security threats.
Meanwhile, Adeleye reassured residents that security agencies in the state were working in synergy to combat crime and ensure the safety of lives and property.
“We were invited to the House to provide insights into the current security situation in Ondo State. We have explained in detail the government’s proactive measures in addressing security challenges.
“We want to reassure the good people of the state that Ondo State remains safe despite security breaches. The Corps is committed to maintaining law and order at all costs to protect residents.
“As of today, all security agencies in the state are working tirelessly in the affected areas. A joint team, comprising the police, the army, the civil defence, the DSS, and Amotekun, is operating efficiently.
“The synergy among these agencies is strong and effective. Officers and men of the Corps will continue to intensify efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state,” he said.
Oladiji expressed confidence that with lawmakers actively engaging their constituencies and traditional rulers playing a stronger role in intelligence gathering, security would be significantly improved across the state.
