Pig farmers especially in Ondo State have been urged to maintain adequate records in their operations for proper planning and ease of access to credit from financial institutions.
Chairman, Ondo State Pig Farmers Association, Mr Francis Dasho made the appeal while speaking with The Hope in Akure, yesterday.
He also admonished pig farmers to take insurance policies in order to reduce risk and urged them to adopt strict biosecurity measures in their various operations.
According to him, “Stakeholders in the pig value chain should make the pig industry attractive by creating awareness among youths and potential pig farmers.
Also, he admonished them to stabilise the prices of pigs in their various states for the development of a healthy and competitive market.
“The good news is that pig has been added as a value chain by the Federal Government of Nigeria, meaning that the Federal and State governments are ready to support the pig farming industry in every possible way and that is what we are seeing in Ondo state with the ongoing construction of a Pig Village by the government.
“When completed, it would create hundreds of job opportunities as well as produce quality pork for consumption for people within and outside the state.”
The Hope reports that the state government paid for the pig equipment in partnership with Big Dutchman in Germany for the installation of the equipment which would house an abattoir and a cooling room for processing the pork for people’s consumption.
Dasho said the factory would be an available market for pig producers as well as addressing annual challenges being faced by pig farmers.
“The project, when completed, would give safety and security to pig farmers who have always been driven out of their location because of residents springing up around them and they have to move which would make them go advance economically.
“It is going to be of great benefits to the farmers and even to the government because we are going to have a cluster of pig farmers and government can monitor while revenue collection would be easy.
“Bulk buyers can come from within and outside the state. The standard and quality of the meat would be upgraded as expected by the consumers. It would also encourage the value chain,” he said.
He however appealed to the state government to complete the project so it can be put to use for the economic benefit of the state.
