However, a controversy continues to make the rounds among the elite and the masses alike regarding usage of phone. It is about whether it is proper to buy phones for teenagers, minor in particular.

The Hope went to town to seek people’s opinion on whether it is appropriate or not. Find excerpts below:

Mayowa Alawode

It’s not advisable to buy phone for secondary school students because our society is so porous with immoralities, all manners of atrocious behaviors and if you check closely they are being perpetrated through what they learn or see online

Adeshina Oluwatoyin

It is not advisable because it tends to take away their attention. At the same time, we are in the era of technology. There are some things you have to do so as to get familiar with computer age.

Ibasanmi Temidayo

No, it is not advisable but based on certain circumstances, It can be permitted. Here are my reasons.

Take for instance, if I have a child in boarding school and anytime I want to call him/her, I can do that through his teacher or principal, there’s no need of buying a phone for such student and whenever he/she comes home for holiday, I have a set of computer system at home. why would he/she need a smart phone ? And they can do whatever they want to do on the computer system but it is not good spending odd hours on the computer system doing irrelevant things.

—Mr. Fabumuyi Joseph

Well, this is 21st century. It is advisable to buy a smart phone for a secondary school student. It will help them in the long run when they know what they are doing and if their parents monitor them in a way that they do not misuse the phone. These days, it is very essential to buy smart phone for secondary school students. Parents should be the one to monitor them so that they will not stay long on the phone, because when they start using the phone excessively it could affect them academically negatively in their academics .

Friday Omosola

Yes, it is very advisable. These days everything is done online. In case of emergency and search for things on Google to gain more knowledge, they must be monitored thoroughly so as not to misuse it.

Ahmed Obasekola

It enhances their knowledge and exposure. Come to think of it, we are in technological age now. Buying phones for secondary school students should have a limitation. You can buy for SS1 to SS3. Because by then, they will be able to do some assignments online to enhance their knowledge and broaden their exposure in many subjects. It is okay for them but anything that has advantage also have disadvantages so they will need to caution and guide them.

Omosebi Anuoluwapo

In my own perspective, it is not advisable because it causes a lot of distractions. All they do  is to go online and search for beautiful dresses and engage in irrelevant chats with their friends after school hours.

And all that hinder focus, it never allowed a secondary school student concentrate.

Student no longer concentrate whenever they have smart phone, they can operate the phone for 24 hours without eating.

—Ilemobayo Rainat Folawe

We are in a global village where everything is computerized. It is necessary to buy smart phone for a secondary school student. It will aid them to study ahead of their teachers and search for things which they don’t understand on the Google to make everything easier for them. In a situation where by they will be carrying dictionary all around will be difficult. It will be easy for them to search online and moreover take the issue of online banking whereby parents want to send money to their children at home and they are not around. They can easily send it through online banking.

God’s Power Oladuwa

I will say yes, it’s good to get smart phone for  secondary school student. In this part of our world, we tend to take things too serious and focus more on the disadvantages and negative effects of technology on the society not minding the good side of it and the idea of learning new things. As for me, the faster they learn the more they get better.

It’s advisable for a secondary school student to own a  smart phone. The major reason is for communication. Their parents might need to communicate with them.

The parents must also ensure they monitor them so that they do not misuse the phone

Their parents must immediately seize the phone from them if there is any suspicion of misuse of the phone.

If not for communication, parents should not buy phone for secondary school students For the sake of learning, a computer would be better.

Emmanuel Olaoluwa

It depends because majority of things we do have advantages and disadvantage getting a phone for secondary school students isn’t entirely wrong. But you would have done your part by instilling morals in the child and you should be able to check the phone once in a while because children can be wild in this age. I don’t think it can be avoided because most assignment are done with the use of technology and most parents are always busy with their phones.

—Mr Adeniyi Joshua

It is advisable, it will help them. We know the usefulness of phone but the issue is that most of the students in secondary school don’t know the value. They misuse it morning, afternoon and night, they don’t make use of it appropriately. Assuming they use it to browse for assignment or goggle search words that they don’t understand. It will be better. So, I think it’s not advisable because it will get them distracted.

— Oyeleke Aderonke

Yes, it is advisable, to buy phones for secondary school students because we are in civilized era where most of the work done nowadays are done electronically and most of their assignments are based on research. So, students with phones will find it easier to do research on the assignments given to them in school. Secondly, most school teachers have introduced e-learning to schools. Where students now receive lectures online in this process, students without phones will find it difficult to participate.

Mr Oladokun Lanre

Children with phones should be guided. You can’t afford to debar a child from technology. That’s the new trend but you should restrict the child. The child should not take the phone out if it’s a smart phone. There should be a time the child will be on phone and also internet connection should be wifi. So, don’t put sim in the phone or get the child laptop from JSS3 to start to learn technology. When you expose their eyes to what is legit, it is that path the student will follow or if he or she learn it outside they can learn towards the fraudulent path. The social media is so porous with immoralities. All manner of atrocious behaviour are being committed now and if you check closely, they were being perpetrated by what they learn or see online
