The old corridors of Iju-Itaogbolu Anglican Grammar School, Itaju, came alive at the weekend as the Class of 1982 returned to their alma mater to commission a fully renovated Biology Laboratory, marking a major milestone in the school’s history.
The laboratory, which had suffered years of neglect, now boasts modern facilities, including upgraded workstations, microscopes, chemical shelves, ventilation systems, and newly painted walls.
The President of the 1982 Set and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Lagos Airport Hotel Ltd., Prince Peter Oyeleye Fasua, in his keynote speech, described the project as a fulfilment of gratitude.
“This was once our cradle of curiosity. Though we had little, we dreamed greatly. Today, we return to remove the barriers we once faced. May this lab give birth to future scientists and innovators,” he said to resounding applause.
The school principal, Mrs Steve Oniya, applauded the gesture, saying the intervention had restored more than just a facility.
“You have rebuilt hope. This gesture teaches loyalty, humility, and responsibility. We will forever protect this legacy,” she assured.
In a brief remark, the Senior Prefect, Joseph Ogunshe, pledged on behalf of the students to make judicious use of the laboratory.
“You have shown us the true meaning of success. We will work hard and, one day, also return to give back,” he said.
Guests were taken on a tour of the facility, followed by prayers of dedication and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Emotions ran high as alumni reunited with former teachers, sharing laughter and memories. Singing and photographs added colour to the occasion.
In her closing remarks, Mrs Kehinde Adeleye thanked the school community for their warm reception.
“Today, we planted a seed of hope. This is only the beginning of greater things to come,” she said.
Adding to the day’s highlights, Alhaji Ibrahim Titilope Gaiyu announced an annual cash prize for the best English Language student moving from SS2 to SS3, urging students to strive for academic excellence.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to further developmental projects, mentorship programmes, and educational support for the school.
