The Jibomode Primary School Football Competition has reached the semi-final stage, with Our Saviour Primary School set to face Ogo Olorun Primary School in the first semi-final.
Holly Flock Primary School will battle Olasunmi Motailatu Primary School in the second semi-final.
The semi-finals are scheduled for Thursday, 23 February 2025, at the Ondo City Stadium.
Nineteen primary schools participated in the competition, which began in November 2024. The teams were divided into two zones: Zone One and Zone Two.
The competition, sponsored by Mr. Kubiseyin Akintoye, aims to promote grassroots football development in the Ondo Kingdom.
Speaking about the initiative, Akintoye revealed that the event is dedicated to the memory of his late mother, fondly called “Mama Jibomode,” and will be organised annually.
Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr. Mayowa Akinwande, commended the schools for their sportsmanship and maturity throughout the tournament.
Akinwande, who also chairs Ekimogun All Stars, highlighted the competition as a platform for identifying young talents for further development.
“Some outstanding players have been identified for monitoring and guidance,” Akinwande said, urging parents to encourage their children to participate in sports alongside academics.
He added, “Sports have provided global recognition for many. Who knows which family the next Nwankwo Kanu, Jay-Jay Okocha, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Odunayo Adekuoroye, Seun Ogunkoya, or others will come from?”
