Fast-rising Juju musician, Ebenezer Soleye, popularly known as Omega Melody, has described Juju music as a melodious and inspirational genre deeply rooted in African culture; a heritage he insists “can never die.”
Omega Melody, who is based in Akure, hails from Ayetoro, Yewa North in Ogun State. In an interview with Friday Extravaganza, he spoke passionately about his love for Juju music, the challenges he has faced, and his upcoming album. Excerpts:
What inspired you to pursue a career as a live band musician specialising in Juju music, and how has the journey been so far?
What inspired me is that this ministry already exists, and I am gifted by God. This divine gift and talent fuel my passion, and my faith in God keeps me on this path. Recent performances have also been a source of motivation, especially the energy and encouragement I receive from my audience.
Moreover, seeing my mentors in Juju music overcome their challenges has been inspiring. It proves that perseverance pays off. As for my journey, it hasn’t been without challenges, but with God’s help, I have been able to overcome them. I believe we will eventually reach our promised land.
How do you keep Juju music relevant and connect with modern audiences during your live performances?
Juju music is a melodious and inspirational genre rooted in African culture; a culture that can never die. We’ve modernised it by incorporating new styles and vibes that resonate with contemporary audiences while staying true to its roots. This evolution has made Juju music more appealing and relevant to modern tastes.
What challenges do Juju musicians face in Nigeria today, and how do you overcome them?
There are numerous challenges, but I see them as stepping stones rather than obstacles. Challenges are a natural part of growth and serve as valuable learning experiences. To overcome them, I rely on my faith in God and confidence in myself. Challenges come, but they eventually pass.
Can you share a memorable experience from one of your live performances?
One unforgettable experience was at a wedding reception where I was asked to represent a colleague. The celebrant was initially upset because I wasn’t the performer he had hired. He insisted I shouldn’t play until the person he booked arrived. After explaining the situation and a brief delay, I performed exceptionally well, captivating the audience. The celebrant later apologised and even offered me more gigs. It was a moment of triumph that I’ll never forget.
In your opinion, how does Juju music contribute to preserving Nigerian culture and heritage?
Juju music is a vital cultural asset for Nigeria, showcasing our heritage on the global stage. It has earned the respect of other countries and continues to promote our rich traditions. The pioneers of Juju music have paved the way for us, and it is our responsibility to preserve and build upon this legacy. Through Juju music, we keep the essence of our culture alive for future generations.
