Junk foods cause heart disease, diabetes – Experts

Medical experts have identified junk foods as the cause of the increasing rate of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke among others.

A nutritionist, Mrs Titilayo Obanla and a Medical Practitioner, Dr Benson Adetayo in separate interviews with The Hope affirmed that many Nigerians have embraced junk foods otherwise called snacks as an alternative to proper meals.

They posited that the reasons vary from the need to rush to work daily and huge schedules at work to the economy, loss of interest in cooking, among others.

According to Obanla, the effects of eating junk foods especially by children was alarming, admonishing parents and guardians to rather encourage their children to be more friendly with fruits even when they cannot give them proper meals.

She added that junk foods are not healthy for children as people believe ,adding that it also has no benefit for adults as it causes more harm than good to the body.

Also, Dr Adetayo said junk foods contain a low quantity of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fibers but are rich in fat, sugar and salt.

He added that children easily get addicted to junk foods making them prone to complications like obesity which leads to high blood pressure, chronic illness, low self-esteem and even depression, as well as affecting how they perform in school.

“What you eat and drink each day affects your health and wellbeing, both physically and mentally. Good nutrition, along with regular exercise will help you maintain a healthy weight, while reducing your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease. However, consuming regular amounts of fast and junk foods will impact your quality of health, and have negative effects on your body.”

He therefore charged parents to give their wards nourishing foods such as fish, potato, egg and fruits that will help them grow

The medical experts advised that even if people must take junk foods it should be once in a while, not regularly.
