Just In: Ramadan begins Saturday as Sultan declares moon sighting

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Saturday, March 1, 2025, as the commencement of the Holy Month of Ramadan following the sighting of the crescent moon across various parts of the country.

Announcing the development at his palace on Friday evening, the revered monarch stated that credible reports from Islamic leaders nationwide confirmed the sighting of the new moon, marking the end of the Islamic month of Shaban.

“The National Moon Sighting Committee has received and verified reports of the crescent moon being sighted in multiple locations across the country. In line with Islamic traditions, this signifies that fasting officially begins on Saturday,” the Sultan declared.

He urged Muslims to use the sacred period for spiritual reflection, intensified prayers for national peace and progress, and acts of charity, particularly towards the less privileged.

“As we commence this important spiritual journey, I call on all faithful to pray fervently for our leaders, the progress of our states, and the overall well-being of our dear nation,” he added.

The Sultan further emphasised the need for unity, generosity, and discipline during the fasting period, calling on well-meaning Nigerians to extend a helping hand to the needy to enable them to partake fully in the observance.
