Labourer jailed over phone theft

From Sade Adewale, Ondo

A 29-year-old labourer, John Ogunmola has been sentenced to three months imprisonment by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo town, for stealing one Infinix Smart 5 Android phone and charger valued at N54,000.

The magistrate, Mrs Mosunmola Ikujuni sentenced the convict after she found him guilty of the offence.

Ogundeji was charged with one-count of stealing the items, belonging to one Rafiu Gbadamosi.

The prosecutor, Inspector Moremi Akao said the convict committed the offence on June 9, 2024, at about 07:40 p.m at Sport Bet shop, Sabo area, Ondo.

The offence contravenes Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Akao prayed the court to sentence him according to his plea.

The convict who had no legal representation, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, saying he was tempted.

Ikujuni, however, sentenced him to three months imprisonment without an option of fine.

During allocutus, the convict said: “I don’t know what came over me. I came to Ondo to see my girlfriend.

“I was arrested through my girlfriend. After taking the phone, I travelled back to Osun State before I was arrested.

“I ran from my parents in Ore to a friend’s place in Osun because I stole my mother’s money. So, the day I stole the phone was the day I came to see my girlfriend in Ondo”.
