Labourer remanded for defiling 13-year-old

A 40-year-old labourer, Saliu Abubakar, has been remanded by the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo town, for unlawfully and indecently assaulting a 13-year-old girl (names withheld).

The police brought Abubakar before the court on one-count charge of rape.

The police prosecutor, Mr Adebiyi Abiodun said he committed the offence on June 14, 2019 at about 10:00am at road 1, G. R. A, Itanala, Bolorunduro.

The charge read in part,”That you, Saliu Abubaka on June 14, 2019, at about 10:00am at road 1, G. R. A, Itanala, Bolorunduro, Magisterial District did unlawfully and indecently assault the victim, aged 13, without her consent and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 360 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Volume 1 laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The plea of the defendant was not taken.

Abiodun, prayed the court to remand the defendant in Shegede prison, pending the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution in the state Ministry of Justice.

The defence counsel, Olusola Okewoye did not oppose the application made by the prosecutor to remand his client.

The presiding magistrate, Mr Damilola Sekoni, directed that the case file should be transferred to the DPP for advice, while he ordered that hearing notice should also be served on the DPP and the police and adjourned the case till July 10, 2019.
