Labourer remanded for stealing 18 kegs of palm oil

An Akure Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a 27-year-old labourer, Enikan Inibassey, for alleged theft of 18 kegs of palm oil.

Inibassey who resides at Labour Camp, Igbekebo was brought to court on a court of stealing.

 Police prosecutor, Nelson Akintemehin, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at about 6 am sometimes in September 2023, at Agadagba town in the Ondo State.

Aintimehin said the defendant stole 18 kegs of palm oil valued at N616,000, belonging to his employer one Paulina Egbetokun.

He said that the defendant was caught by security guards, who handed him over to the police.

Akintimehin said that the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Law of Ondo State, 2016

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. 

The prosecutor prayed for a date to enable him to assemble his witnesses and open his case.

The defense counsel, A.O. Akinde, urged the court to grant his bail in most liberal terms.

Akintimehin however, opposed the bail application and said the defendant who hailed from Akwa-Ibom State was at flight risk, he the defendant had no family member in the state to link him with, if released could jump bail.

The Chief  Magistrate,  O. Oladapo ordered the remand of the defendant in the police custody till the determination of the case and adjourned till May 13, for hearing.
