The prime suspect apprehended in connection with the gruesome murder of a septuagenarian in Ikare Akoko about three weeks ago, Olaniyi Moses, was on Tuesday arraigned before the Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting at Oke-Eda in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The police brought the accused person before the count on a two-count charge of conspiracy and felony to wit murder.
According to the prosecution, Moses and others at large were alleged to have used wooden axe to cut the 75-year-old woman, Medinat Ala, on the head, and cut off her breasts and private part, which resulted to her death at Oke-Egbe quarters, Ikare Akoko
The prosecution said he committed the offence with others still at large, on November 21, 2018 at about 11: 30pm in Ikare-Akoko, Akoko Magisterial district.
The alleged offence was said to be contrary to Section 316(1) and punishable under Section 324,319(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
In the Police First Information Report before the court, the defendant disclosed that he inherited the house where the deceased lived from his father and that he is now the landlord, who oversees all actions that took place in the house.
He told the court that there was a lady living with the septuagenarian, stating that she is the right person answerable to the case, but she was no where to be found since the incident, which led to his being apprehended and arraigned before the court.
The prosecuting counsel, Inspector Uloh Goodluck, prayed the court for a two-week adjournment to enable the police complete their investigation.
He, therefore, urged the court to order the detention of the accused in police custody, in order to help police in their investigation.
Lawyers to the accused C. O Falana, holding the brief of Kayode Adeola, did not oppose the application made by the prosecutor.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Charity Adeyanju, ordered that the defendant be detained in police custody, while the investigation is going on.
She adjourned the case till 24, December 2018.
