The anti-open grazing bill, if passed into law, would increase the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it has been learnt.
The Chairman of House Committee on Agriculture, Mr Taofik Muhammed made this known in an interview with The Hope yesterday in Akure.
” He said if the bill is finally passed into law, the life of the clashes between herders and farmers would be reduced.
He said the passage of the bill into law would also encourage more farmers to go into farming activities to increase production which will bring about food sufficiency.
According to the committee Chairman, many of the moribund industries would be revived and they will have abundance of raw materials for production.
In addition, it will create employment opportunities because agriculture still stands as the only sector that can accommodate more people, saying there are lots of opportunities in farming.
He disclosed that the bill passage was delayed because the house needed to do a lot of technical work on it.
“We would look at the bill holistically because Nigeria is a nation and we believe in one Nigeria which consists of various ethnics.”
He stressed that there is need to look at the bill critically to ensure that the development of the nation is given a priority as well as ensuring that a satisfactory result is achieved .
He advised farmers and the youth in particular to go into other agricultural areas that can fetch them money which may not be too challenging, advising, that they could embrace tomato farming which could generate as much as N6m a year for them.
