Lawyer frowns at Fulani herdsmen recall  to North

An Akure-based legal practitioner,  Mr. Olaleye Akintububo, has condemned the purported order by the Northern Elders directing Fulani herdsmen to  return  to the North, saying it is not only divisive, but a tall order that is grossly unrealistic.

Akintuhubo, who stated this in a telephone interview with in Akure, The Hope Metro said the best thing to do is to call a true national conference where the ‘plethoral of grievances,’ which cut across the various 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria would be discussed with a view to find a lasting solution to them, so as to guarantee peaceful co-existence among the numerous ethnic nationalities.

Noting that the call is practically not realisable, he said,  “Where are the normads going to get adequate pastures for their cattle in the North?”

According to him,  “the relationship between Northern and Southern Nigeria is symbiotic. That is to say, it is of mutual or reciprocal benefits.

“The herdsmen and farmers clash goes beyond the ordinary. It has turned political in all ramifications.

“So,  recalling the herdsmen back to the North means they are confined to that geopolitical zone. It is a gross violation of their freedom of movement which is one of the inalienable fundamental rights guaranteed by the  Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.

” It is even against the provisions of all known fundamental instruments such as African Charter of Human and Peoples Right, UNDHR etc.”

A house-wife, Mode Akinosin, has pleaded with a  Customary Court sitting in Odigbo to dissolve her 15-years association with  her husband, a police officer, Akingun Ojomu, over alleged constant fighting and serious beating.

The petitioner,  Mode, whose address  was not provided, had revealed to the court that sometime ago, the family relocated to Lagos where her husband married another woman without her notice .

She said that the  development resulted into serious fight, stressing that she no longer love him due to the endless beatings.

“After awhile, we came back to Ore, while the fight and beatings continued. I do not love and adore him any longer because he is always beating me.

“Also, there was habitual destruction of my property,  lack of care for the three children, defamation of character, non challant attitude and continuous failure to pay children school fees  are reasons I want an end to this marriage,” she pleaded.

However,  the respondent was not in court to counter  the claims.

In  his ruling, the presiding judge, Mr. B.E Adenigbo, said the case had suffered several adjournments due to the absence of the respondent, whom had since been served with court  notice.

He  said, “to make the matter worse, the respondent did not pay the dowry of the petitioner. So,  the party can go on their own ways.”

The court, however, ordered the respondent to pay N5000 each  for the feeding of the last two children starting from August 30, while both of them should  take responsibility of the children education and welfare
