Senate spokesperson, Senator Ajibola Basiru has admitted political leadership in Nigeria is challenging.
The senator, representing Osun Central Senatorial District, said that Nigeria needs to research its leadership structure and process of selection.
He said, “the process of selection, the process of attainment of leadership is absolutely flawed and that is why it is very important for us to encourage people of goodwill, intellectual and sagacity, and uncommon morality to get engaged in our political sphere.”
“If we do not engage politics, we will end up in being ruled by those who are lesser than us and they will take us to where we dont want.” He added.
Basiru said this, while delivering his lecture on “Leadership in a decadent society: Treading the solitary road”, virtually at the 60th birthday of the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Labode Popoola, held at the institutions auditorium in Osogbo.
The senator charged Institutions to do more research into the country’s leadership structure, the process of selection and ascension to leadership in the country.
The Chancellor of the institution, Apostle Folorunsho Alakija maintained that there is corruption in every part of Nigeria, and it has invaded our county in extreme.
“Corruption is not limited to government officials but our institutions are also part if this menace of corruption. Our youth have lost hope in the country as a result of corruption they are looking for every opportunity to leave the shore of our land.”
Speaking on the same topic, the Chief Executive of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Is-haq Oloyede noted that a decadent society would produce a decadent leadership.
In his words, “When a decadent society is allowed to appoint a leader, the possibility is very high that they will point a decadent leader.”
