Learning, research my priority

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Prof Olugbenga Ige, yesterday promised to give research and learning a priority within the period he would serve as Acting VC.

Prof. Ige who made this known while speaking with journalists at his residence in Akure, the Ondo state capital, said this is to place the institution on the international map of recognition.

The Acting VC who specially appreciated God and the state governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, for the opportunity given to him to serve the state and the University, also promised to justify the confidence reposed in him.

Prof. Ige particularly said his vision is to transform the University to a globally recognised University both in learning and research.

The Visitor to the University and governor the Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, had on Friday approved the appointment of Professor Olugbenga Ige as Acting Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, with effect from  January 6, 2020, following the expiration of the tenure of Professor Igbekele Ajibefun as the Vice Chancellor.

The appointment is for a period of six months. Until his appointment, Prof Ige was Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) of the University.

Governor Akeredolu congratulated the Acting Vice Chancellor and wished him success in his onerous task of  steering the ship of the University to greater heights.

Speaking on his appointment Prof Ige, among other things promised a stable academic calendar, conducive environment for learning and teaching, better welfare of staff and students as well as harmonious relationship with various unions’ leadership in the University.

He equally said his tenure would ensure harmonious working relationship with heads of security agencies, traditional rulers and community heads in the host community to ensure security of lives and properties of the students living off campus.

“My major concern now is to build on current academic stability that we have in the University so that our students will know when to come in and when to graduate. Apart from that, I also want to focus on research. It is your research output that determines how you are rated globally,” he stressed.

While adding that the needed environment would be provided for research to thrive, the Acting VC also revealed that he would set up a Research Committee to be headed by a professor that is well grounded and groomed so that  the desired results would be achieved.

Reacting to the appointment, Mr. Tope Famuti, Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Branch, described the appointment of Prof Ige as a cheering news for the University community, assuring him of their good cooperation to enable him success in the tasks ahead.

He described Prof Ige as a man of the masses, a combination of kindness and integrity, saying this is the best thing that could happen to the institution in the recent times.

Famuti said, the Acting VC  is a sound administrator and he has no doubt that he is going to correct all the wrongs in the institution, just as he urged him to remain focus and determined to make positive impacts on the University and bring back the University culture.
