LG boss launches sanitation campaign to tackle environmental waste

The Chairman of Akoko North-East Local Government, Mutiu Olawale, has launched a sweeping sanitation campaign aimed at improving environmental hygiene and public health across the council area.
Under the “Make Akoko North-East Clean” initiative, the local government carried out a coordinated clean-up exercise along Ikare Express Road on Thursday.
The operation targeted large heaps of waste indiscriminately dumped along the roadside, which had become a growing concern for both residents and travellers.
The sanitation drive brought together top council officials, political aides, members of the newly inaugurated Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) Committee, and Environmental Service Workers.
The team worked collectively to clear waste and restore cleanliness to the busy corridor and its surrounding areas.
Representing the council chairman, the Vice Chairman, Folashade Gold, commended participants for their commitment and called on residents to support the government’s efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
“Our administration has zero tolerance for environmental negligence. This initiative is a call to action for every resident — we all have a role to play in keeping our surroundings clean,” she said.
“This is just the beginning of regular environmental interventions that will continue across the local government.”
She further warned against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, stressing that such behaviour poses a serious risk to public health and would not be condoned.
