The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Saturday exercised his franchise in the state’s local government elections, underscoring the importance of the process in fostering grassroots development.
Speaking after casting his vote, Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bolstering the local government system, in compliance with the law, as a means to achieve sustainable development in communities.

The Governor voted at Polling Unit 5, Ugbo Ward 4, Ilaje Local Government Area, lauding the smooth electoral process and commending the efforts of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC).
Addressing journalists, Aiyedatiwa highlighted the peaceful atmosphere of the election and the encouraging turnout of voters.
“You can see the turnout. People are here, performing their civic rights peacefully without any crisis,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the election’s conduct, the Governor drew parallels with the November 16, 2024, governorship election, describing it as a benchmark for fairness and credibility.

“This is just like a follow-up to what happened on the 16th of November, 2024, where we had the governorship election. The turnout was massive and also peaceful,” he said.
“In fact, it has been judged as one of the most peaceful elections in Nigeria in recent times, credible, fair, and conclusive, conducted by INEC. Taking a cue from that, ODIEC has also made thorough preparations for this day. All the materials arrived early enough.”
The Governor noted that some voters had already participated before his arrival and observed that the turnout and security arrangements mirrored those of the previous election.
“From my observation, it’s not different from the November 16 election in terms of turnout and security. The people of Ondo State are very civil, cooperative, and are participating peacefully without any problems,” he added.
Expressing optimism about the results, Aiyedatiwa anticipated a victory for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“At the end of the day, I believe, just as we had it in the last election when our party was victorious across all local governments, I don’t expect anything less from this election as well.”
Commenting on the withdrawal of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the polls, the Governor criticised the move.
“For them to pull out at the last moment is cowardice, if I may say. They participated in the entire process since the election timetable was released by ODIEC, obtained forms, went through the processes, and suddenly pulled out. I don’t know their reasons, but for me, the election will still go on.
“Maybe it’s fear of losing or logistical concerns, but whatever reason they had is known only to them. Other political parties are also participating, so it’s their choice,” he stated.
The Governor also expressed gratitude to the people of the state for their participation, emphasising that the peaceful conduct of the election showcased the maturity and cooperation of Ondo State citizens.
