The Ondo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, has commended all local governments in the State for their steadfastness during the recent gubernatorial election.
Alhaji Takuro expressed his gratitude at a one-day general capacity-building workshop held for staff of the State Local Government Service Commission, Local Government Staff Loan Board, Local Government Pension Transitional Department, and Local Government Staff Training School.
The event, themed “Discipline and Disciplinary Procedures in the Workplace,” was held in Akure, Ondo State Capital.
He reiterated that the current administration prioritises grassroots development, with the local government sector consistently receiving the governor’s attention.
Takuro further noted that there is no policy or document aimed at improving the welfare of local government staff that the governor has not endorsed.
He emphasised that the local government was also the first to benefit from the implementation of the new minimum wage.
The Commissioner stated that the government expects participants to remain productive and prepared to work at all times.
He acknowledged the collaborative efforts that led to the governor’s approval of the full implementation of the Local Government Scheme of Service (Grade Level 17).
Earlier in his welcome address, Hon. Femi Idris, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, expressed gratitude to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his consistent support and commitment to the state’s development.
He described the governor’s leadership and vision as a source of hope for the people.
Idris encouraged participants to use the workshop as an opportunity for sober reflection and to evaluate their responsibilities of delivering efficient and effective services to the masses.
He urged attendees to remain focused, attentive, and collaborative in achieving their objectives and making Ondo State a better place.
“I want all participants to know that this yearly event is interpreted differently by various groups.
“It is therefore essential for us to adapt to the paradigm shifts that come with the responsibilities of these inevitable changes,” he said.
He assured participants of the government’s commitment to prioritising staff development, improving service delivery, and strengthening partnerships with stakeholders.
In a keynote address, Dr Bayo Ilawole, Permanent Secretary of the Local Government Service Commission, outlined the commission’s achievements in 2024.
These included the completion of promotion exercises, enhanced staff welfare, increased training opportunities, and advancements in digital transformation.
Dr Ilawole highlighted that the commission made history by appointing the largest number of heads of local government in Ondo State.
“In the coming year, we will focus on consolidating our achievements, leveraging our strengths, and addressing our weaknesses.
Let us stay committed to our mission and vision as we strive to improve our services and provide value to our stakeholders,” he said.
Guest lecturer, Professor Tomola M. Obamuyi from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, delivered a presentation titled “Effective Conduct of Government Business for Efficient Service Delivery.”
He examined the principles, components, and challenges of effective government operations and proposed strategies for overcoming these challenges.
The professor underscored the importance of service delivery, including public services such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social welfare.
He emphasised that civil servants must demonstrate strong leadership and management skills alongside a commitment to public service.
He also stressed the need for accountability and transparency in their roles, ensuring their actions are justified and citizens are engaged effectively.
Director of Works, Mr Ayo Emidun described the annual seminar on “Discipline and Disciplinary Procedures in the Workplace” as crucial for improving workplace morale and discipline.
“Today’s seminar has boosted my morale and increased my knowledge of disciplinary procedures,” he said.
He added that the workshop could motivate employees across the state’s 18 local governments, particularly those struggling with workplace engagement, to improve their attitudes and performance.
