Man, 20, remanded for armed robbery, rape

An Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting at Oke-Eda,  has  remanded a 20-year-old man, Tunde Akinwumi, in prison custody for allegedly raping and robbing a girl of her belongings.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Suleiman Abdulateef, told the court that Akinwumi and one other at large, while armed with stainless knife and other offensive weapons attacked and robbed the victim, one Faith Ilori, of her Vivo handset valued at N10,000, and a Jean skirt valued at N4,000.

“The accused person abducted Faith to Adeyemi street, in Ondo town, detained her against her will and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her,” the prosecutor stated.

Abdulateef said the accused who is standing trial for armed robbery, abduction and rape, allegedly committed the offences on May 6, 2019 at about 1:00am at Kola rewire junction, Ondo town.

He said the first offence contravened sections 6(a) & (b), 361, 1, 2 (a) & (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The second offence was also contrary to and punishable under section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The plea of the accused person was not taken. The prosecutor urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody, pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    Since the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case, the magistrate, Mrs Bob-Manuel, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody, pending advice from the office of the DPP.

   Bob-Manuel adjourned the case till July 1, 2019 for review.
