By Victor Akinkuolie, Ado-Ekiti

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced a 25-year old man, Fajana Olajide, to life imprisonment for raping a 17-year old girl.

Olajide was arraigned before Justice Lekan Ogunmoye on January 18, 2024 on a one-count charge of rape.

The charge reads: “The defendant, on 14th July 2023 in Ikere Ekiti, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did rape a 17-year old girl, contrary to Section 31(2) of the Child’s Rights Law, Cap.C7, laws of Ekiti State, 2012.”

During her testimony, the victim narrated: “I was a student and apprentice, learning makeovers.

“I was going to shop around the Ijoka area of Ikere Ekiti when I saw the defendant beside the road. He called me, but I refused to answer. He shouted at me, and I became afraid, so I approached him.

“He claimed I had a family curse that would stop me from succeeding in life.

He ordered me to follow him to his house and told me to bring some salt. I went home and brought it.

“Afterwards, he instructed me to remove my clothes and be naked. I complied.

He gave me an egg to rub my body, which he broke into a bucket containing black and red threads.

He then ordered me to lie on the bed and had sexual intercourse with me.

“He said I would need ₦16,000 to complete the ritual. I told him I only had ₦3,000 in my account. I withdrew it from a POS operator for him. He collected it and again ordered me to remove my clothes and lie on the bed.

“When he attempted to have sex with me again, I became conscious and refused. I left the place. Later, he kept calling my phone, but I refused to answer.

“I narrated what happened to my mother when I got home, despite his warning not to tell anyone or I would die immediately,” she concluded.

The prosecutor, Adetola Johnson, called three witnesses and tendered the defendant’s statements as exhibits.

The defendant, represented by his lawyer, testified in his defence but called no witnesses.

In his judgement, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye remarked: “The inevitable conclusion in the circumstance is that the guilt of the defendant has been established beyond reasonable doubt, thus necessitating his conviction.”

He ruled: “The defendant is accordingly convicted as charged and hereby sentenced to life imprisonment.”
