Man, 26, remanded for raping niece

A 26-year-old man, Abibu Babatunde, has been remanded in prison by an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping his 14-year-old niece.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused person forcefully had unlawful canal knowledge of his 14-year-old niece.

The accused person, who is facing a one-count charge bothering on rape, pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against him.

He was  said  to have  committed the offence between September 2018 and July 2019 at Sabo area, Ile-Ife, contrary to the provisions of section 222 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defence counsel, Mr Ben Adirieje, prayed the court to admit the accused person to bail in most liberal terms.

He assured the court  that his client would not jump bail, but provide reliable sureties.

Magistrate Olukunle Owolawi, who refused to admit the  accused  to bail, ordered  his  remand  in Ile-Ife prison custody and  adjourned till August 8, 2019 for hearing.
