A 28-year-old man, Akinola Pelumi, has been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court over alleged possession of Indian hemp.
Pelumi, a resident of Atikankan in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, is facing a charge of possession of Indian hemp.
The police prosecutor, Olumide Bamigbade, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 15, 2023 at about 9:00 a.m in Ado-Ekiti.
Bamigbade alleged that when the defendant was apprehended by the police, he had in his possession, weeds suspected to be indian hemp.
He said the offence contravenes Section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act 1966.
The prosecutor asked the court for a short adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses for proper prosecution.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty, while his counsel, Mr Busuyi Ayorinde, urged the court to grant him bail, promising that he would stand his trial.
The Magistrate, Mrs Olubunmi Bamidele, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum.
She adjourned the case till March 27, 2023 for hearing.
