A 39-year-old man, Mobolaji Olatawura, has been remanded in the Olokuta Correctional Centre by an Akure Magistrates’ Court, over allegations of fraud and obtaining money under false pretence.

Olatawura, whose address was not provided, was arraigned by the Ondo State Police command on seven counts bordering on felony.

The police prosecutor, Augustine Omhenimhen, told the court that the offences were committed on June 21, 2024.

Olatawura allegedly collected N15m from one Akinnubi Valentine under the pretence of selling a property.

He was also accused of selling a property belonging to the Adoga Abiodun family and converting the N15m entrusted to him for its purchase.

The defendant was said to have misappropriated the funds despite being in a fiduciary relationship with Valentine.

He allegedly forged a power of attorney for the property and impersonated a lawyer to carry out the fraudulent transaction.

In addition, Olatawura was accused of assaulting a police officer, ASP Yusuf Oderemi, by dragging and holding onto his uniform to resist arrest.

Omhenimhen said the offences violated Sections 249(d), 356, 383, 390, 419, 467, and 484 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor said he had two witnesses in court and intended to call four more, requesting time to review the case file and prepare for trial.

Defence counsel M.O. Ojo, while not opposing the prosecution’s request, urged the court to grant bail on lenient terms, assuring that his client would not jump bail and would provide credible sureties.

Olatawura failed to meet the bail conditions and was subsequently remanded in custody.

The case was adjourned till February 13, 2025, for further hearing.
