Man, 40, remanded for stabbing neighbour

An Odigbo Chief Magistrate Court has remanded a 40-year-old man, Ekwebelem Obinna at the Okitipupa Correctional Centre for allegedly stabbing his neighbour with a knife. 

Men of the Ondo State Police Command arraigned the defendant before Chief Magistrate D.O. Ogunfuyi, on a count charge bordering on criminal insubordination.

According to the prosecution, the defendant committed the offence on February 11, 2024, at about 4 pm at Adolak Hotel in Ore, Ondo State.

The prosecutor, Inspector Usifo James told the court that the accused used knife to stab one Christian Onyegasi, on his lap, and caused him injury on his head and face.

The offence contravenes Section 355 of the Criminal, Code Cap. 37, Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

When the charge was read, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

Usifo sought an adjournment to enable him study the case file and prepare his witnesses for trial.

The defence counsel, Mr. M.E. Tiewe, did not oppose the prosecutor’s application. But he prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.

The prosecutor, however, opposed the application made by the defence counsel, saying that the victim was still in the hospital.

He prayed the court to remand the defendant pending the time the victim would be discharged.

Chief Magistrate D.O. Ogunfuyi, in his ruling, remanded the defendant at the Okitipupa facility and adjourned the case till March 20, 2024, for mention.
