By Oluwadamilola Akinduro
A 58-year-old farmer, Olaniyi Omosuyi, has been remanded by an Akure Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl.
The accused person allegedly committed the offence on July 31, 2023 at about 14:30 hours at Onifon Aladura village, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The state prosecutor, Segun Akeredolu told the court that Omosuyi unlawfully ‘defiled’ the minor by forcefully having sexual intercourse with her.
The offence, Mr Akeredolu said, contravened Section 3(1) (c) and punishable under Section 3(2) of the Ondo State violence against person (Prohibition) Law of Ondo State, 2020.
The accused, whose address was not given in court, was docked for rape.
Although the accused person denied committing the crime, the Chief Magistrate, Damilola Sekoni ordered his remand in prison, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Sekoni adjourned the case till February 5, 2024 for hearing.
In a similar case, an Ikeja Magistrate Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of one Sunday Okonkwo at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on Tuesday for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl.
Police prosecutor, Kehinde Ajayi, had told the court that Okonkwo allegedly committed the offence sometime in 2022 at Abaranje, Ikotun, Lagos.
He said Okonkwo had carnal knowledge of the minor without her consent; an offence which he said contravened the Criminal Laws of Lagos State (2015).
Presiding Chief Magistrate, Ejiro Kubeinje did not take Okonkwo’s plea before he ordered that the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
He adjourned the case till February 6.
The offence is punishable by life imprisonment, according to Lagos State laws.
