Man, 60, commits suicide

Tragedy has struck at Itapaji community in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State following the discovery of the lifeless body of a 60-year-old man who was said to have committed suicide by hanging himself.

The victim whose  name was given as Mr. Daniel Sakpe, was said to have hung himself with a tiny rope on wooden pilar at the back of his house located at Omobayi area in the agrarian community.

At press time, the cause of the incident which has thrown the sleepy community into mourning was still sketchy.

But it was, however, gathered that the victim, a farmer and  father of five children, had woken up in the middle of the night on the fateful day and told his wife that he wanted to go to the toilet to ease himself.

The late Sakpe was said to have stayed for quite a while, which made his wife to be  worried over    his long stay  in the toilet.

It was learnt that when the woman waited for a while expecting her husband  to join her on bed,  curiously  traced him to the backyard, but could not locate him .

Few minutes later, the deceased’s wife was said to have raised alarm and woken up one of her daughters, identified as Rebecca, who also joined her mother in searching for the late Sakpe.

The lifeless body of the deceased was reportedly discovered by his daughter, Rebecca, who was said to have pointed torch light to the direction where the body of her father was dangling on a wooden pillar at the back of the house, after which they alerted people in their neighbourhood.

 The Hope Metro learnt that  his family members including sympathisers who thronged the place, described the deceased as a good Christian, who always contributed meaningfully to the development of the town.

Meanwhile, a source close to the police at Ikole Divisional Police station told our correspondent that the body of the late Sakpe has been removed by the traditionalists for burial, while investigation had begun to unravel the cause of the incident.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti state command, Mr.Caleb Nwachukwu, said he had not been briefed on the matter, but promised to get back to our correspondent as soon as he was properly briefed.
