A man, Saheed Muhammad, has been accused of assaulting his wife, Funmi Muhammad, over a dispute involving money allegedly stolen to buy Sallah dress.
The matter came up before the Customary Court in Akure, following a complaint by Saheed that Funmi took N70,000 from his wardrobe without permission.
Saheed (complainant) told the court that he had informed his wife that he could not afford to buy new clothes for this year’s Sallah, due to financial difficulties.
He claimed that despite this, Funmi took the money to purchase a dress for Sallah, which led to an argument between them.
He admitted to beating Funmi during the altercation.
Saheed also stated that he gave Funmi N65,000, the previous week to take care of her hair and other needs.
Funmi denied taking the money without permission and accused her husband of lying about his financial situation to justify the assault.
She said, “I always buy new clothes for Sallah; I wouldn’t wear last year’s dress. How can he say he is broke when it is still the beginning of the month?”
Saheed pleaded with the court to order Funmi to return the money, stressing that he worked hard every day without rest while she did not contribute financially.
He said, “Please, my Lord, help me beg her to return the money. I work from Monday to Sunday without resting and all she does is stay at home. The money was meant for Sallah preparation.”
In her ruling, Ireti Sunday ordered Funmi to return N50,000 to her husband by Friday.
She also ordered Saheed to apologise to Funmi for assaulting her.
She advised the couple to discuss their issues and involve each other in decision-making to avoid further conflicts.
